Rivo Torto Sanctuary – The Refuge of Beginnings
A few steps from Assisi, in the silence of the Umbrian valley, stands the Sanctuary of Rivo Torto, the humble place where St. Francis and his first brothers lived before receiving the Porziuncola.
The name comes from the small stream that winds its way alongside the sanctuary—the “crooked river”—a symbol of the simple life and the uneven but grace-filled path taken by those young men in love with God.
Inside, the “Capellina del Tugurio” is preserved, a small structure reminiscent of the stone hut where Francis slept directly on the ground, sharing bread and prayer with his companions.
There, the fraternal spirit was born that would later conquer the world with its message of peace, humility, and joy.
Pilgrims who stop at Rivo Torto feel the echo of a life stripped of all artifice. The silence of the place is dense, but not empty: it is filled with the invisible presence of those who chose poverty as freedom.
Basilica of Saint Clare – The Light of Poverty
At the eastern end of Assisi, embracing the horizon of the valley, stands the Basilica of Saint Clare, guardian of the feminine soul of Franciscanism.
Beneath its pink and white arches beats the life of Saint Clare, the young woman who, inspired by the example of Francis, left everything behind to follow the path of poverty, prayer, and perfect joy.
Built in the 13th century, the basilica houses the incorrupt body of the saint and the Crucifix of San Damiano, the one that spoke to Francis with the words that would change his destiny:
“Francis, repair my house, which, as you see, is in ruins.”
The interior of the temple exudes a luminous peace. The softly golden twilight invites silence and gratitude.
Here, visitors understand that true strength comes from total surrender to the divine will.
“The soul that loves possesses nothing, and yet has everything.” – Saint Clare of Assisi
The Hermit's Prison – The Silence of God
High on Mount Subasio, surrounded by a forest of centuries-old holm oaks, lies the Eremo delle Carceri, the spiritual retreat of St. Francis of Assisi and his first companions.
Far from the hustle and bustle of the world, this place was a refuge of silence, prayer, and communion with nature for them.
The name “Carceri” comes from the ancient meaning of “voluntary confinement”: the sacred isolation where the soul seeks to encounter God.
Among its small stone cells and narrow paths, visitors experience a peace so profound that it seems to come from another time.
The Hermitage is not a museum, but a living space for contemplation.
Here, the wind rustling through the leaves seems to repeat Francis' prayer:
“Most High, all-powerful, good Lord...”
Visiting the Hermitage of the Carceri is an invitation to pause, breathe, and remember that true wisdom is not learned: it is heard.
Saint Mary of the Angels and the Porziuncola
At the foot of Assisi, in the Umbrian valley, stands the majestic Basilica of Saint Mary of the Angels, built to guard a small spiritual jewel: the Porziuncola, the humble chapel where Saint Francis heard his calling and gave life to the great Franciscan family.
Within these simple walls, the young Francis understood the profound meaning of the Gospel and uttered the words that would mark his destiny:
“The Lord revealed to me that I should live according to the form of the holy Gospel.”
Here he founded the Order of Friars Minor, welcomed St. Clare, and asked for her last blessing before he died.
In this same place, the saint experienced one of the greatest gifts granted by the Church: the Indulgence of the Porziuncola, a symbol of God's infinite mercy.
Inside the sanctuary is also the Chapel of the Transit, where Francis gave his soul to the Creator, and the thornless rose bush, a testimony to his pure and ardent love.
Assisi – Where Peace Has a Voice
Nestled among the green hills of Umbria, Assisi is much more than a destination: it is an encounter with the soul.
Its stone streets, bells, and silence tell the story of St. Francis and St. Clare, two lights who transformed the world with their simple faith and love for creation.
To walk through Assisi is to breathe peace.
Every stone holds a prayer, every glance a reflection of eternity.
Here, time stands still... and the spirit awakens.
Those who come to Assisi are not only making an external journey, but also an internal one.
Among its hills, pilgrims discover the value of silence, the joy of simplicity, and the peace that comes from a reconciled heart.
Here, the soul learns to see through the eyes of Francis: with gratitude, humility, and love for all creation.
Assisi is not visited... it is experienced.
