Bolsena – Where the sky touched the earth
On the shores of Italy's cleanest and deepest lake lies Bolsena, a small medieval town shrouded in serenity and legend.
Here, in 1263, during Mass celebrated by a priest who doubted the real presence of Christ in the Eucharist, the consecrated host began to bleed onto the corporal, tangible testimony to the mystery of faith.
Since then, Bolsena has been known as the cradle of the Eucharistic Miracle, a place where every stone and every silence invites contemplation.
Its cobbled streets, the Monaldeschi castle, and the views of the lake offer an environment that seems suspended in time.
The Mystery of the Eucharistic Miracle
Orvieto, a city suspended on a volcanic tuff rock, holds one of the most profound testimonies to the Christian faith: the Eucharistic Miracle of Bolsena (1263), when a consecrated host began to bleed during Mass celebrated by a priest who doubted the real presence of Christ.
The Duomo of Orvieto
A masterpiece of Italian Gothic architecture, with its majestic façade decorated with golden mosaics and biblical sculptures.
Inside, the Chapel of the Corporal preserves the relic of the miracle: the cloth stained with the blood of Christ.
The Dying City
Civita di Bagnoregio is known as “the dying city,” not because of spiritual abandonment, but because of its geological fragility. It can only be accessed on foot, crossing a panoramic bridge that prepares the heart for contemplation.
Main attractions:
Perfectly preserved medieval town center
Quiet streets and an atmosphere of contemplation
Breathtaking views of the Calanchi valley
Church of San Donato (spiritual center of the town)
Civita di Bagnoregio, the town that seems suspended in time
Civita di Bagnoregio was founded by the Etruscans over 2,500 years ago on a plateau of volcanic tuff, in a strategic and naturally defensive position. During Roman times and the Middle Ages, the town underwent significant religious and cultural development. In the 5th century, it became an episcopal see, establishing itself as an important spiritual center in the Lazio region.
From the Renaissance onwards, erosion of the terrain, caused by the fragility of the rock and constant seismic activity, began to progressively isolate the town. This phenomenon led to the gradual depopulation of Civita, which went from being a bustling city to a small inhabited center.
Today, known as “the dying city,” Civita di Bagnoregio is a symbol of human fragility and the permanence of the spirit, a place where history, silence, and contemplation coexist in a unique way.
Visiting Orvieto and Bolsena is like going on an inner journey that links the mystery of the Body of Christ with the courage of a third-century saint.
In Orvieto, your soul contemplates the Eucharistic Miracle, where doubt turns into certainty; in Bolsena, before Saint Christina, you learn that true faith leads you to give your life for Christ.
It is a path that is traveled not only with the feet, but also with the heart:
from the wonder of the miracle to the peace of forgiveness.
