HOME > Santi Quattro Coronati—Roman Houses and Saints John and Paul—San Tommaso in Formis—Monastery of San Gregorio Magno—San Sisto Vecchio

Where?

Santi Quattro Coronati: Located on the street of the same name, halfway between the Colosseum and St. John Lateran; a fortress-basilica that houses a cloistered monastery.

Roman Houses and SS. Giovanni e Paolo: On the Clivo di Scauro hill, beneath the medieval arches that define the character of the Celio.

San Tommaso in Formis: Next to the Arch of Dolabella, integrated into the remains of the Claudian Aqueduct, in the heart of Celio Park.

Monastery of San Gregorio Magno: At the start of the climb up the Celio, opposite the Circus Maximus, marking the beginning of the neighborhood.

San Sisto Vecchio: Located opposite the Baths of Caracalla, at the start of the Via Appia, closing the spiritual circle of the rione.

How?

This tour should be undertaken with a spirit of spiritual humility. Upon entering places such as the Santi Quattro Coronati, the pilgrim should leave behind all haste and noise. An attitude of silent observation is recommended, respecting the Augustinian nuns’ life of prayer and the memory of the martyrs. It is a journey to be undertaken with a heart open to compassion, understanding that each stop tells a story of service to the most vulnerable or of personal sacrifice.

Why?

This tour is designed to help you experience Rome through the lens of charity and seclusion. This tour does not showcase the power of the Vatican, but rather the power of devotion: the charity of St. Gregory, the courage of the martyrs John and Paul, the aid given to slaves at St. Thomas, and the reform of St. Dominic at St. Sixtus. It is designed to reveal that the Caelian Hill is not merely a hill, but a bastion of spiritual resistance where faith has remained alive and humble for two millennia.

Santi Quattro Coronati
More than just a basilica, it is a fortified complex that exudes an unspoiled medieval tranquility. Its cloister is one of the most spiritual places in Rome, where the silence is broken only by the murmur of the fountain and the prayers of the cloistered nuns, who preserve the memory of the martyrs who chose death over betraying their calling.

Roman Houses of Saints John and Paul
A journey into the intimacy of the early Church. Walking through these Roman rooms is like touching the very place where faith was lived out in community and where Saints John and Paul were martyred in their own home; it is a space that connects ancient daily life with the mystery of sacrifice for Christ.

San Tommaso in Formis
This small site, nestled within a Roman aqueduct, is the heart of the Trinitarian Order. It was here that Saint John of Matha lived and devoted himself to the redemption of captives; his famous mosaic, “Christ Between Two Slaves,” serves as a reminder that the Christian faith is, above all, a force of liberation and mercy for the oppressed.

Monastery of St. Gregory Magno
The home of a pope who became a monk. In this place, from which St. Gregory sent missionaries to evangelize distant lands, there is an atmosphere of universal service; visiting his cathedra and the family oratories helps one understand how true authority in the Church springs from detachment and love for the poor.

San Sisto Vecchio
A place of great significance in Dominican history, where Saint Dominic of Guzmán gathered the first nuns for his reform. Its frescoes and austere atmosphere evoke the purity of preaching and spiritual discipline, offering a perfect conclusion to the tour with a reflection on the constant renewal of religious life.
